RubricFlow: Work Should Fit People—Not Force People to Fit the Tool

1. The Lived Experience: Meet Sofia
Sofia is a sophomore college student studying computer science and environmental ethics. She is also a first-generation student with ADHD.
Like millions of university students, Sofia’s biggest academic anxiety isn't understanding the material—it's deciphering the "Hidden Curriculum". Her professors upload 4-to-10 page PDF prompts into Canvas. Scattered across pages 2, 5, and 8 are non-negotiable procedural demands: "Must be IEEE double-column format," "File named CS320_Lab2_LastName_FirstName.pdf," "Minimum 5 peer-reviewed sources post-2021," "Blinded submission—remove names from headers."
When Sofia opens these documents, her working memory shuts down. The prose wall triggers intense task-initiation paralysis. Last term, Sofia lost 20% on an A-grade ethical analysis simply because she exported the file as single-column APA with her name in the header. Traditional tools (Notion, Google Docs, Canvas) do nothing to bridge this barrier.
2. What We Built: The RubricFlow Solution
RubricFlow adapts academic work to fit human neurodiversity and lived experiences. Instead of forcing students to hunt through dense academic prose:
- Pre-Flight Spec Dashboard: Automatically extracts every non-negotiable operational constraint (file naming syntax, citation style, word count bounds, rubric point weights).
- De-Jargon & Clarity Lens: Real-time translation tooltips for intimidating academic verbs (e.g. "explicate epistemological foundations" → "explain how we know this is true") with integrated Bionic Reading and Web Speech API audio playback.
- Milestone Action Pathway: Transforms an intimidating 10-page paper into four calm, 30-minute sequential micro-steps.
- Pre-Submission Flight-Readiness Inspector: An interactive compliance auditor that checks the student's actual file name, draft word count, citation count, and section headings against the professor's rubric, issuing a green 100% Flight-Ready Pass before submission.
3. Technical Execution & Architecture
Built for zero-failure reliability, instant client-side performance, and uncompromising accessibility:
- Client-Side Heuristic & NLP Parsing Engine: Regex-based structural extraction running entirely in the browser. Zero server latency, works 100% offline, and guarantees complete student privacy.
- Universal Accessibility Design System: Clean CSS architecture with semantic HTML5 ARIA landmarks, WCAG AAA OLED high-contrast mode, warm sepia paper mode, and Atkinson Hyperlegible dyslexia font toggles.
- Native Web Speech API Integration: Procedural text-to-speech audio reader enabling students with dyslexia or auditory processing preferences to absorb rubrics hands-free.
- Deterministic Compliance Auditor: Real-time regex file-syntax matching and mathematical range verification preventing late penalties and procedural point loss.
4. What We Learned & What's Next
We learned that student accessibility is not just about screen-reader compatibility—it is about cognitive accessibility. Reducing cognitive load at the initiation phase of an assignment creates a calm, empowered student rather than an anxious one.
Roadmap: Chrome Extension for 1-click Canvas/Blackboard syllabus auto-import, and collaborative peer-review checklist sharing.
